The full impact of hay fever is often downplayed but the reality is that hay fever sufferers are more likely to develop asthma than those who don't suffer from hay fever. This likelihood also increases if hay fever is left untreated. Consider that the World Health Organisation has begun the Initiative on Allergic Rhinitis and it's Impact on Asthma. This initiative recognises the relationship between asthma and hay fever and also stresses the importance of early treatment to prevent the occurrence of asthma. The effects on personal health missed work and school as well as the financial costs all mean that the link between hay fever and asthma is not one to take lightly.
There is a close link between allergies and asthma, with 70% of people with asthma reporting symptoms brought on by allergies and many also having allergic conditions such as conjunctivitis or eczema. Some common symptoms of hay fever and perennial rhinitis are:
sneezing, itchy, blocked or runny nose red, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat, inner ear or mouth headaches, a loss of concentration and generally feeling unwell
Fluticasone nasal spray, a synthetic corticosteroid, treats asthma and allergic rhinitis effectively. It is also used to treat eosinophilic esophagitis. Corticosteroids are strong drugs and usually can control even severe cases of asthma over the long term and maintain good lung function. This medication is also available as a cream for the treatment of eczema and psoriasis.
Fluticasone is marketed under the different names in different countries. For instance Flovent and Flixotide is used for asthma, Flonase and Flixonase for treating allergic rhinitis, Nasofan, Advair or Seretide (combination of fluticasone and salmeterol). Cutivate and Flutivate (available as a cream) treat eczema and psoriasis.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Flonase on February 22, 2006. It is a synthetic glucocorticoid. It interacts with steroid cytoplasmic receptors to induce antiinflammatory effects. Besides, it also possesses antipruritic and antiinflammatory actions. This helps to relieve asthmas symptoms or inflammation and symptoms of allergic rhinitis effectively.
